  • NAMS Group Ltd Training in New Zealand for NAMS Property has now been confirmed for 26 and 27 March and 3 and 4 April. Training will be held in Auckland, Rotorua, Wellington, and Christchurch. Trainers include:
  1. John O’Brien, Auckland City Council, Manager Property Management. John is the Chairman of the NAMS Property steering group and has been actively involved in the NAMS Property asset planning process for last 10 years.
  2. Ed Rafferty, SPM Consultants Ltd, Senior Advisor. Ed is an experienced trainer of asset management principles. He has been practising asset management planning for the past 15 years in a number of industries and roles.

  • The National Health Asset Management Guidebook has now been added to the toolkit. This was developed in 2005/06 through the Ministry of Health and Crown Funding Agency and has now been largely captured in NAMS Property. However, specific asset management issues for the health industry are documented.
  • National Health Spreadsheets. The 2007 Capital Intentions and Asset Management spreadsheets are now available through the tool kit. The spreadsheets have been updated to capture data more clearly and to enable the creation of a more comprehensive National Asset Management Plan. The information is essential to inform discussions with Treasury regarding funding for the Health Capital budget.
  • Three months after launching NAMS Property and NAMS Group are receiving positive comments on the technical content and style of the hard-copy manual. Kathy Dever-Tod, Acting CEO NAMS Group says “its very encouraging that a range of different industries are starting to gain value from the manual and are finding it easy to read. There has been a significant amount of work that has gone into the material over the past 18 months and we are pleased that the tools, processes and experiences are being shared with both government and non-government organisations”.
  • Australian organisations are becoming members. A range of local and central government organisations in Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales have become members during January 2007. These include Councils, a Rail company and a Community Housing organisation.
  • Benchmarking study being scoped. Around 11 organisations that have used the NAMS Property principles over the past 5 years will be sharing specific data, information and knowledge over the next 3 to 4 months. The focus will be on comparing information on long term strategic planning with shorter term and historic operational. Over time, outcomes of the study will show the true value of long term planning.  If you are interested in being part of this benchmarking, please make contact with the NAMS Property administrator.

Important notes to members

Rawlinsons Ltd aim to complete the 2006/07 update to the unit rates in the Building Component Guidelines. The NAMS Property demonstration system and on-line database will be updated by the end of February.

Local Government organisations continue to dominate membership. However, a large number of people in the NZ and Australian housing industry are also becoming members.

Local Authorities and Consulting companies in New Zealand are continually challenged to find people with experience in the asset management planning for property assets.  Once an organisation decides to adopt the long term strategic to tactical approach for their portfolios, it can be near to impossible to find the right people to implement the processes and make the necessary changes.  Organisations are training internal people in the processes and providing them with tools (computer systems) so that they can make it happen.  Training is provided through rolling NAMS events and other regular courses run by professional training companies.

 
Only a few university courses have recognised the topic.  Lincoln University provides a specific masters programme for post graduate property people.  Auckland University has a regular course component for Masters in Transport Engineering where people from a range of disciplines are students.
